8 Hair Oils You Need for Mind, Body and Spirit

Argan Oil

Great for achieving shiny hair, this light oil leaves the hair soft and silky and also tames frizz (great for those last-minute touch-ups). Achieve a faster blow-dry time too- apply Argan Oil on wet ends and watch the magic happen. If you use it daily and need to rinse it out, you may need to shampoo a few times to get rid of the residue.

Jojoba Oil

Sensitive skin can find refuge in this plant oil. This is very close to the natural oils that your body produces. Use for a scalp massage or as a moisturizing mask to smooth flyaways.

Avocado Oil

Who doesn't love avocados? Here's one more reason to jump on the bandwagon: Whereas Coconut Oil is only partially liquified, Avocado Oil is a stable liquid at room temperature. This bright green oil gives your hair moisture and shine without leaving it greasy-looking, so it's a great leave-in product for those with natural hair. It also contains Biotin, also known as Vitamin B7, that protects cells from damage.

Geranium Oil

This oil strengthens the hair. Add one or two drops to a bigger solution of Olive or Jojoba Oil to DIY your own solution.

Coconut Oil

This oil is having a Pinterest moment- you can find it in everything. However, it's best reserved for the driest and most damaged hair. If you'd like to use it on finer hair, try it as a pre-shampoo hair mask. Coconut Oil also works well as a detangler and frizz fighter. Oh, and it smells like a tropical paradise.

Sunfower Oil

Lightweight, detangling and softening- this oil is an emollient, which means that it distributes evenly across the hair and leaves a silky feel. This oil is light enough to provide some bulk to thinning hair.

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil is odorless and lighter than Olive and Coconut Oil, so it's an ideal leave-in product and dandruff reliever for those with finer hair.

Olive Oil

Normally you'd use this oil for cooking, but the fatty acids in Olive Oil also work to coat the hair strands and add protection against heat styling. Applying this oil to your ends adds some weight. This oil also fights dandruff and frizz, adds shine and softens the hair for a healthier look.

Try an Olive Oil hair mask by massaging 1/2 cup of warm Olive Oil onto your scalp and throughout your hair, leaving on for 30 minutes and washing out with shampoo and a cold water rinse.


Try the DIY method of blending your own concoction or find products that contain the natural oils. If you decide to use concentrated oil, use one to two drops (the thicker the hair, the more drops you'll need) and apply from mid-lengths to the ends. There's no need to add to your roots because the natural oils from your scalp will do the work. When it comes to oils, customize the blend to meet your unique hair needs!
